Game Engines
Game Engines
What is a game engine?
A game engine is the basic software framework used for the development of video games. The core functionality typically provided by a game engine includes a rendering engine for 2D and 3D graphics, a physics engine or collision detection (and response), sound, scripting, animation, artificial intelligence, networking, streaming, memory management, threading, localization support, and a scene graph.
What is a rendering engine?
The rendering engine is what gives the game a more realistic makeover. It changes a solid, blurred block into a crate or a brick wall when it is rendered. It also allows the object to respond back. Such as if a light source is shining on a wet surface or is shining on a car then the surface of that object will either reflect the light back or lighten up its surface and create a shadow behind it from where the light cannot get.
What is a physics engine?
A physics engine is what makes the game move and react like real life. an example of this is if I push a chair then I would expect it to move away from me. or if I was to shoot a glass window then I would expect it to smash when the bullet hits the glass. The movements of people and the trees are also to do with physics. if the wind blows you would expect the leaves to blow in the direction the wind is blowing.
What is Artificial intelligence (AI)?
Artificial intelligence is the intelligence exhibited by machines or software. It is also the academic field study which studies how to create computers and computer software that are capable on intelligent behavior. The central problems (or goals) of AI research include reasoning, knowledge, planning, learning, natural language processing (communication), perception and the ability to move and manipulate objects.
Examples of game engines:
Unreal Engine: Unreal engine is one of the best game engines around with extremely good graphics compared to the other game engines. It is going to be the most highly used game engine for the new consoles (PS4 & Xbox One). Games that have used Unreal engine are:
Gears of War
Unreal Tournament series
Duke Nukem Forever
Rune: Halls of Valhalla
X-COM: Enforcer
Unity: The Unity game engine is free and one of the most easy to use game engine that can make some really good games. It hasn't really been used for major games other than a few but with the new Unity 5 game engine out which has some pretty good running and graphics capability. Games that have used Unity engine are:
Battlestar Galactica Online
Dead Trigger
Angry Birds epic
Interstellar Marines
Kerbal Space Program
CryEngine: CryEngine is the only game engine that can truly compete against Unreal Engine. There are most likely others but CryEngine is by far the best. When Unreal 3 and CryEngine 3 released, CryEngine had better visual effects and ran a lot smoother than Unreal 3. When CryEngine 4 is released the gaming industry will have a major surprise with the graphics it will have to offer. Games that have used CryEngine are:
Crysis series
HomeFront series
Sniper: Ghost warrior series
State of Decay
Ryse: Son of Rome

Genre description
|
Genre example
|
First-person shooter
|
This genre is based on first-person view shooters as you can see. It allows you to experience the game as if you are there so it is more realistic.
|
An example of a first-person shooter is the best-selling series known as Call of duty. This is a game that almost everyone enjoys.

These type of games are made to test peoples solving capabilities and then improve them by making harder puzzles for them to solve. This type of genre has been around for many years and families still enjoy this type of game and it will still be a famous genre in 100 years time.
|
An example of a puzzle game is ‘loops of Zen’, Pac man and Puzzle guest for Ds. These games have been known to improve peoples
|
RPGs(Role-Playing Games)
|
The role-playing games are the best types of games to me because they allow the player to have freedom and experience/play the game how they want which gives the feeling of control.
|
The most famous example of this type of genre a (role-playing game) is the GTA/Grand Theft Auto series which is where a player controls a character who gets involved in trouble with gangs, police or even drug lords. These games serious allow players to do what they want such as roaming the streets, hijack a car or start fights with the residents. Another example is the Batman series where the player plays the famous Batman himself to take down the thugs of Arkham.
|
Sports
|
This genre is aimed at sporty people who love and have passion for sports. This type of game allows even the sportiest people to relax and have peace while enjoying the adrenaline rush of sport games.
|
An example of a sports game is Fight Night Champion
|
Comedy
|
This type of genre is aimed at people who like having a laugh while playing a game so it advances their enjoyment playing the game.
|
An example of a funny game is dead pool. It is based on the Marvel character Dead pool and his aim to create the most amazing game to rub it in Wolverines face.
|
Dance/kinetic genres(kinetic, PlayStation move, WII)
|
This genre is aimed at people who like to get up and move around and the people who like actively moving about all of the time. It is a genre that allows people to get and to stay fit and healthy so no one can get ill or obese because of video games.
|
Just Dance 2014 Is a kinetic game that makes players get up of their feet and dance along with the game.
The player has to move in sync with character on screen in order to get a good score and rise on the global rank. The more advanced dance movers you do then the higher your score however the advance moves are a lot harder to do due to the difficulty level so that is why you get a better score for completing them.
The Just Dance series came out in November 27th 2009 in Europe and then the sequel was released in October 2010.
The game series was very new and was seen as being advanced for the time because of the kinetic movement sensors. It was a new type of game that people wasn’t used too because they was used to consoles and handheld games but not games that involve your body as the controller.
|
Stealth
|
The stealth type of genre was mainly introduced in 1981 with games such as 005, Castle Wolfenstein where created in 1981.
Stealth genre was exciting to use because everyone enjoyed playing hiding seek with their friends and not letting them self’s get caught. So why not introduce this into the gaming industry so people can enjoy the adrenaline at home.
|
Metal gear solid is a well known stealth game that allows players to stealth through levels without being seen by the enemy. You can still go out all guns blazzing but you can still play it in Ghost style or Panther style.
Metal gear solid was first introduced in October 21st 1998 and allowed players to take on the role as Snake who is a specia op agent who takes out very dangerous villians.
People enjoyed the metal gear solid games because eit gave them the rush/adrenaline of excitement to them in their very own home at any time they want.
|
Text adventures
|
Text adventures or interactive fiction were the earliest adventure games.
This type of genre allowed people to have full blown adventures in their own house or out in an arcade. People could leave the real world and enter the virtual world and help the main protagonist accomplish his quest in a fictional world.
People enjoyed these types of games because it gave them the freedom to explore an entirely new world whenever they wanted for just a couple of pence.
|
Zork is a text adventure and it was very famous when it was released because people could transverse in an all new world that was fiction.
Zork allowed players to have multiple choices when it came to a problem such as ‘which path should I take? How should I kill this enemy? Or what should I do next? It truly gave people the freedom of choice and players enjoyed the game knowing that they were not being instructed on how to play the game.
Zork was first written in 1977-1979 and it has had many sequels and now it is classed as a series because of the amount of versions there is of it.

Top 10 games with best storylines
TOP 10 GAMES FOR STORY LINES!!!
Task 1
1:The last of us:
For me the last of us has got the best story line out of all of home because it offers you an experience no other game can which is the realistic build of friendship and what you would do in real life circumstances if you were in an apocalypse.
2:Uncharted franchise:
All of the uncharted games have really good story lines that keep you gripped as well as keeping you laughing throughout which does also add to the grip of the story. The story line for all of the games are basically the same with you (Drake) hunting for treasure and you then bump into bad people looking for the treasure as well and you fight.
3:Dead island:
Dead the story is good but it is also similar to other zombie games which is survive and try to escape. The reason I have put it on this list is because it gave you a new experience which other zombie games did not... better and more improved Human Computer Interaction.
4:Batman Arkham franchise
Batman Arkham franchise has amazing gameplay in my opinion but the story is very good it doesn't really keep you gripped throughout the game which does let the game down slightly but the game is still awesome.
5:Singularity:
This game is a good story because it puts you in the shoes of a solider who has to bend time and stop the world from being destroyed. the beginning and end has an amazing twist to it that will surprise you. probably not now.
6:Dragon age franchise:
The story for dragon age is good for the battles and fights but the basic main plot is not that good. You are a hero that has band together other heroes to save the realm you live in.
7:Far cry 4:
The story is basically the same as 'Far Cry 3' where you are a survivor doing tasks for some boss guy so you can escape and leave the island.
8:Ryse son of Rome:
This is an excellent story for revenge and it is full of twists towards the end. It shows you the sheer anger one gets for revenge when a family member gets killed.
9:GTA V: The story for 'GTA V' is gripping and intriguing because it carries you through the adventures of three characters and it gives you the story of each player.
10:Witcher: assassins of kings:
The story for this game is very interesting because there is a main story but there is also another story describing about who you are playing as and what he does.

BlackJack
What is Blackjack? Blackjack is a card game in which players try to acquire cards with a face value totaling 21 and no more. There are many names for this card game such as Blackjack, Roulette Checks, Roulette Sets, Rakes, Wheels, Ball, Markers, Twenty-one & more.
The Rules of the game:
Deal seven cards to three-four people. You then Place the remainder of the cards face down on the table, then turn the top one over to form a discard pile. Player to dealer's left goes first. They must follow suit or rank, but each player can lay as long a chain or run as they can, providing the card ranks match as you jump from suit to suit. For example, if the discard is five hearts, you can play a run such as: five spades, six spades, six clubs, six diamonds, seven diamonds, seven clubs. If any player cannot go, they pick up the top card from the discard pile.
The wild cards are as follows: eights make the next player miss a go (two eights makes two miss a go etc), king reverses direction of play, but both of these must be played on the right suit or rank. Ace changes the suit and can be played on anything. Playing a two makes the next player skip their turn and pick up two instead, unless they can also play a two, in which case the player to their left must pick up four. But the "jacks on twos" rule also applies; black jacks make the next player pick up five cards, but twos can be played on black jacks. This does mean, of course, that someone could feasibly be forced to pick up 18 cards from the discard pile at once (four twos and two black jacks). The only get-out clause is to lay a red jack, which cancels out black jacks but not twos. Remember that the first black jack or two played must be laid on a card of the right suit.
And now for the final power card: the queen. Whenever you lay a queen, you must cover her with another card, but it can be any card. And since the object is to get rid of your cards, and this could open up new runs, this is a canny rule indeed. Still with me?
Just a bit more to learn. When a player can win the game on their next go, they have to say "Last cards" or knock on the table. If they neglect to do this, they cannot go out on their next go, but must lay their card or cards and then pick up one instead. If they do call, they are free to win on their next go.
